Detective Bureau
The Auburn Police Department’s Detective Bureau consists of four Detectives and one Captain. The Detective Bureau’s main function is to investigate serious crimes. The natures of these crimes are many and varied. Most crimes investigated are felonies in which the victims are physically injured, sexually assaulted or sustain a significant financial loss. The types of crimes that are commonly handled are Homicide, Rape, Robbery, Assaults with weapons, Burglary, Grand Larceny and Identity Theft. A Detective is on call 24 hours a day so that they may respond whenever the investigation of a serious crime is required.

Finger Lakes Drug Task Force
The Finger Lakes Drug Task Force, although a separate division, works hand in hand with the Detective Bureau. The Finger Lakes Drug Task Force consists of a sergeant and three full time officers.The task force also has well established working relationships with the New York State Police and the United States Drug Enforcement Administration, along with the many different police agencies within the Finger Lakes region.

The task forces operational jurisdiction is not limited to just the City of Auburn, but the entire Finger Lakes region. The task force not only deals with crimes involving narcotics, but also investigates vice related crimes which include prostitution and gambling. The task force relies heavily on information gleaned from the public regarding illegal activities in their neighborhoods and communities, and these tips have led to many arrests.
