CITY OF AUBURN SUMMER EVENTS

Each year the City of Auburn holds numerous events throughout the city. Unfortunately this year we will be postponing some of our Downtown Events due to social distancing recommendations and restrictions on mass gatherings intended to slow the spread of Covid-19.

The events that have been postponed are Music on the Mall (Fridays throughout summer), Sizzlin’ Summer Kick-Off (June 20), Founder’s Day (August 8) and Tomatofest (September 12).

The City of Auburn is monitoring the situation closely and is exploring a variety of possible alternatives to our typical events that would provide the community with recreation and entertainment while still complying with recommended best practices to slow the spread of Covid-19.

STAY SAFE AND HEALTHY,  Jeff Dygert, City Manager, email: jdygert@auburnny.gov phone: 315-255-4146

April 16, 2020 - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
City of Auburn Announces Event Cancellations for the Month of May 2020

Due to the COVID-19 crisis City of Auburn sponsored events and all events planned for City parks and downtown are cancelled for the month of May 2020.

“The COVID-19 crisis presents very challenging times for us all and it is unfortunate that some of our favorite event traditions will need to take a year off, however, we must plan ahead and in the interest of public health and safety our May events will be cancelled,” stated Mayor Michael Quill.

The following list of events will be cancelled for the month of May 2020:
• All events in City Parks and City sponsored events downtown
• The Majorpalooza 5k “Catch Me If You Can” run and all other Majorpalooza events
• Memorial Day Events including parade, Veterans Park ceremony, food truck rodeo and duck derby
• Downtown Business Improvement District (BID) sponsored volunteer flower planting days

“There is a tremendous amount of planning and financial investment that the City and event organizers make to execute our larger downtown and park events. We cannot plan and promote events this year in the same way we always have. Moving forward the city will be analyzing the directives from the State to determine the fate of events for June, July, August, etc. Decisions about future month’s events will be made on a rolling basis as we make our way through this crisis. We hope we will be able to maintain some of our popular summer events but those decisions will be made as we get closer to summer,” stated City Manager Jeff Dygert.

On March 13, 2020, Governor Cuomo issued Executive Order No. 202.1. This Order suspends the Open Meetings Law, in order to allow local governing bodies to close meetings to the public. This order also allows local officials to meet remotely by conference call or similar service. If the meeting is closed to the public or conducted by a conference call or similar service, then the public must be able to either (a) view the meeting; or (b) listen to the meeting. The meetings must be recorded and later transcribed.

The part of the Governor's Executive order pertaining to the Open Meetings Law expressly states:

Article 7 of the Public Officers Law, to the extent necessary to permit any public body to meet and take such actions authorized by the law without permitting in public in-person access to meetings and authorizing such meetings to be held remotely by conference call or similar service, provided that the public has the ability to view or listen to such proceeding and that such meetings are recorded and later transcribed;”
