After graduating from Auburn High School in 1984, Chief Slayton attended Onondaga rCommunity College and Univesity South Carolina Aiken, before beginning his career with the Auburn Police Department in 1998. He began
his career as a patrol officer for ten years, then as a School Resource Officer for another eight years. He also served as a Field Training Officer. Chief Slayton was promoted in 2016 to Patrol Lieutenant, and in May of 2019 he took over as Administrative Lieutenant of Planning and Training before being named Chief of Police in July of 2021.

Chief Slayton participates in numerous committees for various community
partner agencies which include being a member of the Board of Directors for the Cayuga/Seneca Community Action Agency, a member for the Cayuga County Alcohol & Substance Abuse Committee, and a member of the City of Auburn Public Nuisance Committee. 

Deputy Chief Timothy A. Spingler

Deputy ChiDeputy Chief Spingleref Spingler is a lifelong resident of Weedsport, NY. After              graduating from Weedsport Central School in 1995, Deputy Chief Spingler attended Canisius College and graduated Cum Laude in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in Sociology/ Anthropology and Criminal Justice. Deputy Chief Spingler began his career with the Auburn Police Department in 2004 as a patrol officer. He was promoted in 2012 to Patrol Sergeant, and in December of 2012 he took over as the Officer In Charge of the Finger Lakes Drug Task Force. In July 2021, he took over the Office of Training and Planning, before his promotion to Deputy Chief in July of 2023.

Deputy Chief Spingler serves as second in command within the police          department to the Chief of Police. He oversees the Finger Lakes Drug Task Force. He works closely with the Chief of Police in studying crime reports and current literature in law enforcement to determine trends, and makes recommendations for changes in organization and operating policies and procedures. He also manages and participates in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and          priorities for assigned programs.

Deputy Chief Spingler oversees the activities of the police department personnel in their efforts to          preserve order, protect life and property, investigate crimes and enforce laws. He monitors and evaluates the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery methods and procedures and recommends, within    departmental policy, appropriate actions. He serves as a liaison for the assigned divisions with other      divisions, departments, elected officials, media, and outside agencies. Deputy Chief Spingler also serves as the internal affairs administrator for the department.
