The Hazardous Materials Team responds to all incidents where hazardous materials are involved or believed to be involved.The Team responds to all hazardous material incidents in Cayuga County, to include the City of Auburn and is part of the Regional Hazardous Materials Consortium.

The Hazardous Materials Team responds to hazardous material incidents to; assist the Incident Commander with identifying the material or substance involved, advise the Incident Commander of appropriate actions to take based on the known hazards of the material or substance involved, provide rescue/recovery services for victims in the contaminated area, and attempt to mitigate the situation.

The Team currently operates with one HAZMAT Truck and WMD/HAZMAT Trailer.The Team has extensive specialized equipment used to identify the hazards, enter the contaminated area safely, mitigate the hazards, and decontaminate both victims and Team members.

Currently there are sixty one Auburn Fire Department members assigned to the Hazardous Materials Team.Team members train on a regular basis to handle hazardous material incidents that may occur in our response area.Training includes: in house HAZMAT Team training, NYSOFPC run courses held at the Auburn Fire Department and at the Fire Academy, and training through the Department of Homeland Security.
