Public Comment Period Now Open for Draft Cayuga County Local Solid Waste Management Plan

New York State requires that all mandated Planning Units provide and continually update a Local Solid Waste Management Plan (LSWMP) on behalf of the Towns, Villages, and Cities within. Cayuga County, as a NYS DEC mandated Planning Unit, is responsible for providing this LSWMP on behalf of its 33 municipalities. An LSMWP is a planning document intended to be used as a tool for organization and decision making in regard to a Planning Unit’s solid waste management and recycling program.

The Plan sets forth the following five focus areas with strategic action items intended to maintain and improve the County’s existing solid waste management and recycling program:

• Waste Prevention, Reduction, and Reuse
• Recyclables Recovery and Recycling Market Development
• Solid Waste and Recycling Policy Standards
• Public Outreach and Educational Resources
• Organics Reduction and Recycling

Public Comment Period

Individuals wishing to comment on the Plan have the opportunity to submit written comments from January 18th until March 2nd, 2024. Comments can be submitted by email to etuthill@cayugacounty.us or by mail to 160 Genesee St, 5th Floor, Auburn, NY 13021. Please include “Comments on Cayuga County LSWMP” in the subject line of the email.

Informational Meetings on Draft Cayuga County Local Solid Waste Management Plan:  The Cayuga County Department of Planning and Economic Development will be hosting both an in-person and virtual informational meeting open to the public. The intent of the informational meetings is to provide an overview of the key elements of the plan and allow attendees to ask questions or submit comments.

In-Person Meeting – Will be held on February 13, 2024 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm at the Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES (in Conference Rooms 1+2) at 1879 W Genesee Street Rd, Auburn, NY 13021.
