Authors Janell Hobson and Kate Larson discuss Harriet Tubman’s life with powerful visuals and meaningful conversations

AUBURN, NY - On July 15, 2022, renowned authors Dr. Janell Hobson and Dr. Kate Larson will discuss a “new outlook” on Harriet Tubman’s life based on new perspectives from Ms. Magazine’s commemorative bicentennial issue that pays tribute to this “groundbreaking feminist icon.” It will take place at the Carriage House Theater (203 Genesee Street, Auburn, NY, 13021) from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The program is open to the public, and is sponsored by the NYS Equal Rights Heritage Center with support provided by the City of Auburn’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) allocation of funds for the Harriet Tubman Bicentennial.

Dr. Hobson is a professor at the University of Albany in the Department of Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies. She’s known for authoring “When God Lost Her Tongue: Historical Consciousness and the Black Feminist Imagination (Routledge, 2021),” “Venus in the Dark: Blackness and Beauty in Popular Culture (Routledge, 2005, second edition, 2018),” and so much more. For this year’s bicentennial celebration, she played a major role in guest editing for the Ms. Magazine, Harriet Tubman Bicentennial Project.

As for Dr. Kate Clifford Larson, she’s a Brandeis University Women’s Studies Research Center Scholar, best-selling author and award-winning consultant who’s worked on several biographies and feature film scripts, including Kasi Lemmons’s Harriet. She recently released a book in June titled, “Harriet Tubman: A Reference Guide to Her Life and Works.” Larson’s passion for telling the life of Tubman has helped improve the visitor experience at both Harriet Tubman National Parks in Auburn and Maryland.

The Carriage House Theater will also host fitness coach, speaker and author Metra Lundy for a screening of her film, “A Walk In Her Shoes,” July 16 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Lundy’s documentary embodies self-discovery, beating the odds and retracing Harriet Tubman’s steps of freedom, from Maryland to Canada. She stopped in Auburn on this life-changing trip. The event is open to the public, and a discussion will be held after the screening. This event is sponsored by the Harriet Tubman National Historical Park and the Seward House Museum.

Dr. Janell Hobson and Kate Larson are both available for interviews to preview next week’s event.
