Urban Forestry

The services provided by the Department of Public Works Shade Trees Division include the planting and maintenance of street trees and trees located on city property.

The City of Auburn is a member of Tree City USA, therefore, we must abide by strict criteria regarding removal of live/living trees.  Trees that are effecting the condition of a sidewalk, or causing sewer line infiltration will not be removed.  In such cases, the City will trim back the roots of the tree that is causing the problem.

Trees are removed based on the severity of the problem, based on the City's diagnosis.  After a tree has been removed, a separate crew will remove the stump.  If the property owner wishes to have a new tree replace the tree that was removed, they may fill out a request form.  Not all trees removed will be replaced with new trees in the same calendar year.

Some trees are beyond the City's ability to maintain, and are therefore referred to a third party contractor. Delays may occur based on contractor availability.

If you have a question or concern relating to a city tree, please call the Department of Public Works at (315) 253-9554.
